Are you interested in a Home Based Business?

What You Should Consider First.

With the sudden surge in entrepreneurial spirit and the affordability of technology, more and more small business people are launching home-based businesses. Money is the primary reason for most to start businesses in their homes, as many home-based businesses start with less than $5,000 and no savings (according to the Peterson's Ultimate Office Survival Guide). Many experience that a home office is a good starting point but not a realistic long-term solution. However, there are thousands of business owners who would have it no other way. Here are some things to consider before diving into your home-based business venture:

  • How much foot traffic will you have? Clients, prospects, salespeople, and mail carriers may all need to visit. Is your home set up to accommodate visitors? Some homes may not be set up to meet with clients, but a restaurant or coffee shop might suit you just fine.
  • How will your family adjust to the office? Will you be able to work without intrusions? Will you be able to keep business equipment in a separate space and off limits to any other family members? Will there be any resentment for working in the home and not spending time with the family while there?
  • Think about the environment in which you'll be working. Is lighting ample for what you will need? Do you have pets that will be distracting or need your assistance during the day?

There are also marketing concerns with starting your home-based business. Keep in mind the following:

  • Use a P.O. Box address for your business cards, stationery, and collateral. This will look better than your home street address or apartment number.
  • Do spend the money for a separate phone line. A phone line is essential in putting your business out there in a professional manner.
  • Make sure to eliminate household noise. Close doors whenever you are on the phone with clients; this will save you the embarrassment of having to tell your child or dog to "be quiet."
  • Stay involved in outside meetings and activities. Plan lunch dates, go to seminars, and check in with clients as much as possible. Don't feel trapped by your home office.

Starting a home-based business is a great idea for those who are doing it on a tight budget and don't want to worry about how to make the rent payment for next month. If a home-based office is not for you, you will know it right away. But keep in mind as you grow and become more successful, you can move to a larger space and out of the home.
