{"id":4340,"date":"2024-04-12T06:16:09","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T23:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.harborstone.com\/wph\/workarea\/?p=4340"},"modified":"2024-04-12T06:16:40","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T23:16:40","slug":"love-is-not-in-the-air-romance-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.harborstone.com\/wph\/workarea\/love-is-not-in-the-air-romance-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Love is (Not) In The Air: Romance Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What it is: <\/strong>Romantic scammers adopt a fake identity \u2013 usually online \u2013&nbsp;and work to create trust and affection with a potential victim until the targeted person is comfortable sharing personal information or sending money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it works:<\/strong> Many times, the victims are older people who may be lonely and emotionally vulnerable, but these scams have the potential to affect anyone \u2013 men and women, young or old, low-income or affluent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a typical scenario, the scammers research potential victims online, using social media profiles and dating sites to find their target and gather information about a person\u2019s life and personality. They are very skilled at manipulation and will invest significant time to cultivate the victim\u2019s trust and interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a potential victim becomes invested in the relationship and believes their love interest is sincere, the scammer will use one of many creative ploys to extract money, either once or over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be very wary if you decide to accept a stranger\u2019s request to connect on social media. At the very least, be sure to check out their profile to see if it looks legitimate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slow down! Whether online or in person, take time to get to know the love interest and make sure they\u2019re telling you the truth about who they are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never wire money or send cash or gift cards to an online love interest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch for these red flags:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the relationship pace seems rushed, like a \u201cwhirlwind romance,\u201d pay attention. Romance scammers profess love quickly, often without even meeting you in person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A romance scammer may say they\u2019re planning to visit you, but the visit doesn\u2019t work out for some reason. The reason could seem very legitimate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most scammers first test the waters by claiming a crisis or emergency \u2013 such as being sick, hurt, in jail or stranded \u00ad\u2013 which your \u201cshort-term loan\u201d could fix for them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you meet on a dating site, the scammer may try quickly to lure you off that platform, asking to use personal email or text to communicate (which makes it easier for them to access your personal information).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Common faked occupations, which lend credibility to the scammer\u2019s inability to meet in person, include deployed military service member and offshore oil rig worker, among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you think you\u2019re being scammed, take action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/what-know-about-romance-scams#avoid%20losing\">Federal Trade Commission<\/a> offers these tips for outsmarting a potential romance scam if you suspect it\u2019s happening to you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop communicating with the person immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk to someone you trust. Do your friends or family say they\u2019re concerned about your new love interest?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search online for the type of job the person has plus the word \u201cscammer.\u201d Have other people posted similar stories? For example, search for \u201coil rig scammer\u201d or \u201cUS Army scammer.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do a reverse image search of the person\u2019s profile picture. Is it associated with another name or with details that don\u2019t match up? Those are signs of a scam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you fall victim to a romance scammer, report your experience to whichever online dating or social media site you were on and <a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>file a complaint<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;with the
