One fast-growing scam uses AI to copy people\u2019s voices. Older adults are often the main targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminals use voice-cloning software to make a fake version of someone\u2019s voice \u2014 like a family member, friend or even a trusted professional. They only need a few seconds of sound, which they can grab from social media or voicemail greetings. Then the scammer calls and pretends to be that person, often saying they are in trouble and need money right away. They may use phrases like \u201cGrandma, it\u2019s me\u201d or \u201cPlease help. I need money right now\u201d to provoke fear and get the victim to act quickly, without thinking it through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why scammers target seniors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older adults are often less familiar with new technology and more likely to believe a familiar voice. Many also have savings that scammers want to steal. Scammers also know that seniors have a strong urge to protect loved ones, which makes these tricks more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The damage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says fake-voice scams are rising quickly. Victims can lose anywhere from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. But it\u2019s not just about money. Many people feel embarrassed or ashamed or lose trust after realizing a fake voice tricked them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protect yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As AI tools get smarter, staying alert is key.Experts suggest a few simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pause before acting. Hang up and call the person back using a number you already know.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a safe word. Pick a secret word or phrase only family members know.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit sharing. Be careful about posting videos or voice clips online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report scams. If you think you\u2019ve been targeted, call your financial institution and <a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/#\/\">report it to the FTC<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTC is fighting back.
