A growing tactic targets something most of us trust every day: our digital calendars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it works: <\/strong>Scammers exploit calendar settings that automatically add events from emails, shared links, or subscriptions. The fraudulent event may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Claim that a payment is due or overdue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use official-sounding language or logos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include links or phone numbers for \u201cbilling support.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure you to act quickly to avoid penalties, data loss, or account closure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you click on the invite, you will likely be directed to a fake website or connected to someone pretending to represent a real company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to protect yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reduce your risk by taking a few simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adjust your calendar settings.<\/strong> In your calendar app, disable automatic calendar invitations or events from unknown senders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t click calendar links for payments.<\/strong> Legitimate companies, including Harborstone, will not demand payment through calendar notifications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verify independently.<\/strong> If you see a reminder about a bill, go directly to the organization\u2019s official website or app or call a trusted phone number (not the one listed in the calendar event).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delete suspicious events.<\/strong> Remove any questionable calendar items, and don\u2019t click or call any links or phone numbers in them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Report it.<\/strong> If the scam references Harborstone, please let us know so we can help protect you and other members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When in doubt, pause and verify before taking action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can learn more about this topic in an <a href=\"https:\/\/it.lbl.gov\/cyber-alert-phishing-scams-using-google-calendar-invites\/#:~:text=In%20short%2C%20attackers%20disguise%20their,number%20or%20click%20any%20links.\">article that the Berkeley Lab posted<\/a>, which includes examples of fake calendar events.
