Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you close your HELOC within the first two years, Harborstone will charge you an early-closure fee. When it comes time to close your HELOC and remove Harborstone's lien on your home, there is a reconveyance fee.

  • Harborstone does not charge any fees to close your Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC). However, the county charges a reconveyance fee, which varies by location. This fee covers the cost of removing Harborstone Credit Union as a lienholder from your property.

  • Only if you pay off and close your current HELOC or home equity loan with your new Harborstone HELOC at the time of funding.

  • We do not currently offer interest-only payments. However, this is beneficial for you, because you save money over the long term. Interest-only payments do not reduce your principal balance.

  • A HELOC uses your home as collateral and works much like a revolving line of credit, offering access to cash at typically lower interest rates. As you repay your balance, your available credit is restored, allowing you to borrow as much or as little as you need throughout the draw period.

  • Harborstone allows you 10 years to draw and repay as you like. At the end of the 10-year draw period, the line of credit becomes a fixed loan that you pay back for up to 15 years. You can also reapply for a HELOC to extend your draw period another 10 years.

  • You can typically borrow up to 90% of your home's value, minus your outstanding first mortgage balance. For example, if your home is worth $400,000 and you still owe $200,000, you may qualify for a HELOC up to $180,000."

  • The rates on our home equity lines of credit (HELOC) adjust based on changes to the prime rate. Please review the terms of your specific loan to understand the exact adjustment process and how often rate changes may occur.
